Bilder Willem Goeree (1635–1711) & Jan Luyken (1649–1712) – Egyptian Household and Idol Gods, Theraphim, and Canopic Figures – Engraving (Late 17th Century)
Beskrivning
This elaborate engraving presents a visual study of Egyptian idolatry and religious artifacts, contrasting ancient imagery with theological commentary. The scene is populated with an array of Egyptian statues, animal-headed figures, canopic jars, and symbolic relics. At the center, a robed woman—possibly an allegory of Knowledge or Wisdom—gestures toward a tablet while putti and mythological beasts surround her. Above, a curtain is drawn back to reveal a “museum” of votive and ceremonial figures, with each item numbered and aligned in encyclopedic fashion. Architectural ruins in the background evoke the grandeur and mystique of lost civilizations.
Designed by Willem Goeree and engraved by Jan Luyken, the print embodies the 17th-century fascination with Egyptology, antiquarian scholarship, and biblical exegesis. It forms part of a larger body of emblematic and didactic imagery produced for Goeree’s historical-theological works, which sought to interpret pagan artifacts within a Christian framework.
