Bilder Giacomo Lauro (active c. 1580–1630) – Ludus in Amphitheatro Titi Vespasiani (Games in the Colosseum) – Original Copperplate Engraving – c. 1628

Beskrivning
This dramatic copperplate engraving by Giacomo Lauro portrays a vivid scene of gladiatorial combat and animal fights inside the Amphitheatrum Titi Vespasiani, more commonly known as the Colosseum. The chaotic arena is filled with warriors, beasts, and mythological creatures, including lions, elephants, and bulls, all engaged in violent spectacles before an enthralled audience. The composition offers a rare early modern interpretation of Roman ludi, or public games, capturing both the grandeur and brutality of ancient Roman entertainment.
Giacomo Lauro was a Roman engraver and antiquarian best known for his series Antiquae Urbis Splendor, which sought to visually reconstruct the monuments and spectacles of classical Rome. His engravings combined architectural precision with imaginative scenes that reflected the 17th-century fascination with antiquity.
