This detailed copperplate engraving by Jacques de Sève presents three marine mammals. The animals are depicted with anatomical clarity and taxonomic labeling. The long spiraled tusk of the narwhal and the pleated throats of the baleen whales are rendered with precise linework, emphasizing key morphological features. The plate, marked Pl. 8, Page 120, was issued as part of Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle.
Jacques de Sève was one of the principal illustrators for Buffon’s vast natural history project. His engravings combined scientific observation with a clean aesthetic, designed to appeal to both scholars and Enlightenment-era collectors.
