Bilder Theodor de Bry – Hispani Indos oneribus succumbentes crudeliter tractant – Original Engraving with Later Hand-Coloring from Americae Pars Sexta – Frankfurt, 1596

Beskrivning
This powerful engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the brutal treatment of Indigenous people by Spanish soldiers, who are shown forcing them to carry heavy burdens across a rugged mountain path. The title translates as “The Spaniards cruelly mistreat the Indians who collapse under the weight of burdens.” The scene is filled with anguished figures under physical duress, driven by armored men wielding swords and spears. Mountains and rocky terrain emphasize the harshness of both landscape and labor. The hand-coloring adds a dramatic layer to the already vivid composition.
The image was published in Americae Pars Sexta, part of de Bry’s famous Grands Voyages, which illustrated European conquests in the Americas. This particular plate reflects the critical tone of some accounts regarding the cruelty inflicted on Indigenous populations during colonization.
