Bilder Friedrich Justin Bertuch – The Great Comet – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – Early 19th Century

Beskrivning
This celestial engraving illustrates the dramatic appearance of the Great Comet, rendered in two phases as seen from Earth. The star positions are carefully plotted against the tapering trajectory of the comet's luminous tail, forming a visually compelling blend of scientific observation and artistic composition. The image comes from Friedrich Justin Bertuch’s celebrated work Bilderbuch für Kinder ("Picture Book for Children"), one of the earliest encyclopedic works for young readers, published in Weimar in the early 1800s.
Bertuch (1747–1822) was a German publisher and philanthropist who aimed to make scientific knowledge accessible and engaging. His engravings, like this one, were noted for their clarity, vivid hand-coloring, and educational value—bridging Enlightenment ideals with visual storytelling.
