Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin – Bakka and Bukhu Plants – Copperplate Engraving – 18th Century

Beskrivning
This botanical copperplate engraving by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin depicts two medicinal plants described in the writings of Kolben, an early European observer of South African flora. The upper half shows the Bakka plant, known as Bangua among Indigenous populations, with a seated figure for scale or ethnobotanical context. The lower half presents Bukhu, or Spirée, an aromatic shrub also derived from Kolben's accounts. These plants reflect early colonial scientific curiosity and the blending of native knowledge with Enlightenment-era botanical classification.
Bellin, primarily known as a hydrographer and mapmaker, also contributed to natural history works, often including detailed plant depictions in encyclopedic or geographic volumes. The fine linework and dual-plant composition exemplify 18th-century illustrative standards in scientific publishing.
