Beskrivning

This finely detailed copperplate map represents the island of Anjouan (also known as Anzuany), part of the Comoros archipelago off the eastern coast of Africa. The engraving features coastal outlines, topographic relief, and rhumb lines used for maritime navigation, typical of Dutch sea charts from the early 18th century. An ornate cartouche at the bottom provides a descriptive caption in Dutch, explaining the island’s geography and its mountainous terrain, with references to navigation hazards. A compass rose and soundings complete the composition, underscoring the map’s intended use by seafarers.

The map was produced by Frederik Ottens, a prominent Amsterdam-based engraver and publisher active during the early 18th century. The Ottens family firm was known for issuing atlases and separately published maps, often republishing plates acquired from earlier cartographers such as Blaeu, De Wit, and Janssonius. Frederik, together with his brothers, helped shape the Dutch legacy of cartography during a time of global maritime expansion, providing practical and decorative charts to merchants and collectors alike.
