Bilder Jakob van der Schley (1715–1779) – Cananoor – Dutch Fort Plan – Copperplate Engraving – c.1750

Beskrivning
This finely executed copperplate engraving depicts the Dutch fort at Cananoor (present-day Kannur, Kerala, India), a key military and trading post along the Malabar Coast. The plan presents a highly detailed topographical layout of the fortress, complete with bastions, internal buildings, roads, and cultivated grounds. An inset elevation view of the fortifications adds dimensional clarity to the architectural drawing.
The print was engraved by Jakob van der Schley, a prominent 18th-century Dutch engraver and pupil of Bernard Picart. Van der Schley was especially known for his contributions to the Dutch edition of Histoire générale des voyages, a monumental travel and exploration compendium compiled by Antoine-François Prévost. His engravings are marked by technical precision, legibility, and faithful adherence to original source material, often redrawn from French prototypes.
