Bilder Jakob van der Schley (1715–1779) – Map of Trincomalee and Tambalagam Bay – Copperplate Engraving – 1758

Beskrivning
This historical Dutch map depicts the Bay of Trincomalee and Tambalagam Bay, located on the northeastern coast of Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon). Rendered with fine detail and maritime precision, the map includes coastal outlines, topographic elevations, soundings, sailing ships, anchorages, and settlements. The chart was designed to aid navigation and was particularly useful for Dutch East India Company (VOC) seafarers entering this strategically important harbor.
The map was engraved by Jakob van der Schley, a leading Dutch engraver of the 18th century who worked extensively on the Dutch edition of Histoire générale des voyages, based on reports and charts from the VOC and French sources. His work is known for its clarity, precision, and artistic flourishes that reflect the golden age of Dutch cartography.
