Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin – Map of the Island of Tenerife Based on Astronomical Observations – c.1748

Beskrivning
This fine copperplate engraving presents a detailed map of the island of Tenerife, based on astronomical observations. Created by the eminent French hydrographer Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, this map reflects the precision and scientific rigor characteristic of Enlightenment-era cartography. The engraving displays topographic features, ports, coastal outlines, and settlements across the island, which was a crucial Atlantic stopover point for European ships traveling to the Americas and Africa.
The map was engraved by the Dutch master Jakob van der Schley and issued in the Dutch edition of Antoine-François Prévost’s monumental travel collection Histoire générale des voyages, published by Pieter de Hondt. It exemplifies the collaborative network of European cartographers, engravers, and publishers who sought to document and disseminate geographic knowledge throughout the 18th century.
Bellin, hydrographer to the French Navy and the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine, was one of the most influential cartographers of his time. His maps combined elegant design with empirical accuracy. Jakob van der Schley, his engraver, was known for faithfully translating Bellin’s scientific charts into detailed and finely executed copper engravings.
