Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin – Map of Southern Africa and the Cape of Good Hope – Copperplate Engraving – 1757

Beskrivning
This detailed copperplate map, engraved by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, depicts the southern regions of Africa, including the Cape of Good Hope, Namaqualand, and the lands of the “Hottentots” (a historical European term for the Khoikhoi people). The chart features rivers, coastal names, settlements, indigenous territories, and trade routes active during the mid-18th century. Bellin’s map reflects both geographic knowledge and European colonial interests in the region, especially around the Dutch Cape Colony.
Decorative elements include a rococo cartouche bearing the title Carte des Pays des Hottentots et des Cafres, and finely etched topographical details. The map was published as part of Bellin’s contributions to L’Histoire générale des voyages, edited by Antoine-François Prévost, and played a role in shaping European understanding of sub-Saharan Africa during the Enlightenment.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was one of France’s most influential hydrographers, serving as chief cartographer to the French Navy and the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. His maps were widely circulated across Europe and frequently reissued in scientific and exploratory publications.
