Bilder Jacques-Nicolas Bellin – Map of the Theater of War on the Coromandel Coast and in Bengal – Copperplate Engraving – c.1750s

Beskrivning
This detailed 18th-century copperplate map by Jacques-Nicolas Bellin illustrates the southeastern coast of India, including the Coromandel Coast and Bengal, during a period of colonial conflict between European powers. The map highlights important strategic locations such as Madras, Pondicherry, Masulipatnam, and Calcutta, as well as inland routes, rivers, and fortifications. It was likely created in response to the military campaigns of the Carnatic Wars and the Anglo-French rivalry in India, serving both geographic and political purposes.
The composition reflects Bellin’s typical precision in coastal rendering and his ability to convey complex geopolitical landscapes. The map may have appeared in L’Histoire générale des voyages, the monumental French compendium edited by Antoine-François Prévost, to which Bellin contributed hundreds of expertly engraved charts and plans.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703–1772) was one of the leading cartographers of 18th-century France, serving as chief hydrographer to the French Navy and the Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine. His maps combined scientific accuracy with elegant engraving, making them essential references for explorers, merchants, and political observers of his era.
