Bilder Christoph Weigel – Map of Saxonia Inferior (Lower Saxony) – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – 1718

Beskrivning
This finely detailed and beautifully hand-colored copperplate map of Saxonia Inferior (Lower Saxony) was engraved by Christoph Weigel and published in 1718 by Johann Ernst Adelbulner in Nuremberg. The map covers a broad area from Kiel and Rügen in the north to Berlin and Halle in the east, and westward to Oldenburg. It features rivers, principal cities, towns, and territorial boundaries, providing a comprehensive geographic view of northern Germany in the early 18th century.
A charming vignette of Hamburg appears in the lower-left corner, while a decorative cartouche adorns the title, exemplifying the Baroque elegance typical of Weigel’s maps. This map was issued as part of Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas (also known as Atlas scholasticus et itinerarius), a popular school and travel atlas compiled in collaboration with historian Johann David Köhler. The atlas was intended for both educational and practical use, combining geographic accuracy with visual appeal.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), known as "Weigel the Elder," was a German engraver and publisher based in Nuremberg. He produced an extensive range of maps, views, and atlases during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, often in collaboration with leading scholars of his time. His work remains prized for its clarity, craftsmanship, and decorative charm.
