Bilder Christoph Weigel – Map of the Duchy of Württemberg – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – 1718

Beskrivning
This original hand-colored map depicts the Duchy of Württemberg in southwestern Germany, showing its territorial extent, administrative divisions, rivers, and major cities—including Stuttgart, Tübingen, and Ulm—as they appeared in the early 18th century. Engraved by Christoph Weigel and printed in Nuremberg in 1718 by Johann Ernst Adelbulner, the map features clear topographic detail and decorative elements such as a Baroque title cartouche and finely colored borders.
This map was part of the Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas (also known as Atlas scholasticus et itinerarius), a scholarly and practical geographic work created by Weigel in collaboration with historian Johann David Köhler. It served both educational and travel purposes and is noted for its balance of precision and artistic design.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), also known as "Weigel the Elder," was a leading cartographer and engraver based in Nuremberg. His atlases and maps captured the political geography of the Holy Roman Empire and greater Europe in the early 18th century and remain prized for their clarity, craftsmanship, and historical value.
