Bilder Christoph Weigel – Map of Lower Lusatia (Lusatia Inferior) – Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving – 1718

Beskrivning
This original hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts Lusatia Inferior (Lower Lusatia), a historical region in southern Brandenburg, Germany. The map shows towns and settlements such as Spremberg, Senftenberg, Cottbus, Luckau, and Lübben in the Spreewald region. Rivers, forests, roadways, and territorial divisions are clearly marked, reflecting the administrative landscape of the early 18th century.
The map is embellished with two ornate Baroque cartouches—one containing the title and another the mileage scale—typical of Christoph Weigel’s elegant and practical cartographic style. It was printed in Nuremberg by Johann Ernst Adelbulner in 1718 as part of the Bequemer Schul- und Reisen-Atlas (Atlas scholasticus et itinerarius), a geographic work designed for scholarly and travel use, produced in collaboration with historian Johann David Köhler.
Christoph Weigel (1654–1725), also known as “Weigel the Elder,” was a prominent German engraver and cartographer whose atlases covered the political and geographic makeup of the Holy Roman Empire and neighboring regions. His maps are valued for their clarity, decorative refinement, and historical relevance.
