Bilder François Valentijn – Tropical Fish of the Moluccas – Copperplate Engraving – 1724

Beskrivning
This detailed 18th-century copperplate engraving presents a selection of exotic tropical fish from the Indonesian archipelago, particularly the Moluccas, based on observations made during Dutch colonial expeditions. The upper section showcases five species of fish framed within a decorative border, while the lower part offers a landscape composition with multiple specimens arranged on a coastal shore with local dwellings in the background. The work is attributed to the major Dutch natural history chronicle "Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien" by François Valentijn, with engraving likely by Christiaan Friedrich Elliger.
This visual documentation reflects both the scientific curiosity and the artistic conventions of the Dutch Golden Age, in which exotic marine life was studied for classification and illustrated with precision. Such plates were valuable tools in conveying the biodiversity of the East Indies to European audiences in the 18th century.
