Bilder Dominique Vivant Denon – Plan of Temples of Philae – Engraving (1809)

Beskrivning
This antique architectural engraving, titled Plan des Temples de Philie, presents a detailed layout of the sacred temple complex on the island of Philae, one of ancient Egypt’s most important religious sites. The print originates from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte, pendant les campagnes de Bonaparte, Dominique Vivant Denon’s groundbreaking publication documenting Napoleon’s 1798–1801 Egyptian expedition. Published in London by Samuel Bagster in 1809, this volume introduced many monuments to European audiences for the first time. Denon’s architectural plan of Philae reflects both his on-site observations and his commitment to preserving the spatial logic and sacred order of ancient Egyptian construction.
Dominique Vivant Denon (1747–1825) was a French artist, diplomat, and archaeologist who played a central role in recording Egypt’s ancient sites during Napoleon’s campaign. His Voyage en Égypte became a foundational text in the birth of modern Egyptology. Through precise, elegant engravings, Denon bridged scientific inquiry and artistic interpretation, leaving a lasting legacy in both visual culture and historical scholarship.
