Bilder Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741) – Illustration of Sweet Chestnut – Hand-colored engraving (Circa 1737)
Beskrivning
This print is a detailed illustration of a chestnut tree, showing different leaf and flowering stages. Figure a depicts a large, single, serrated leaf of Castanea Sativa (Sweet Chestnut), while figure b shows a branch with smaller leaves and prominent, brown male catkins of Castanea vulgaris, gemeine Castanien. The illustration is meticulously hand-colored to achieve scientific accuracy and vibrant display. The specimens are labeled with Latin and common names and the plate is from the seminal work Phytanthoza-Iconographia, one of the most comprehensive and beautifully illustrated florilegia of the 18th century.
Johann Wilhelm Weinmann was a German apothecary and botanical publisher who commissioned and financed the production of the monumental Phytanthoza-Iconographia. Although not the artist himself, as the book's publisher and driving force, his name is centrally associated with the work. The Phytanthoza-Iconographia utilized an innovative color mezzotint technique to create its thousands of plates, depicting plants from around the world.
