Bilder Louis Philibert Debucourt (1755–1832), after Carmeroy – Who is this Modern Sardanapalus? A Former Footman Who Has Made a Fortune? – Engraving (c. 1820)
Beskrivning
This satirical print portrays an interior scene of ostentatious wealth and decadence, critiquing the rapidly acquired fortunes of the Restoration period in France. The central composition features several scantily-clad women presenting tokens of luxury within a highly ornate room furnished with classical elements and heavy draperies. The accompanying caption directly refers to the legendary Assyrian king Sardanapalus, suggesting that the scene depicts the lavish lifestyle of a newly wealthy figure, potentially an opportunist of humble origins.
Louis Philibert Debucourt was a French printmaker, painter, and illustrator celebrated for his mastery of the color aquatint and stipple engraving techniques during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is renowned for his genre scenes, which often provided vivid and witty depictions of contemporary Parisian life, fashion, and social customs, including both high society and more risqué or satirical subjects. His technical skill in translating paintings to highly detailed prints made him one of the most successful reproductive engravers of his era.
