Leopold III, also known as Saint Leopold, was the Margrave of Austria from 1095 until his death on November 15, 1136. Born in 1073, he was renowned for his piety and significant contributions to the church, including founding several monasteries, such as Klosterneuburg. His effective leadership and devotion to the Christian faith earned him canonization. Saint Leopold is celebrated as the patron saint of Austria, reflecting his enduring legacy in the region.
Leonhard Beck (c. 1480–1542) was a German painter and printmaker active during the late Gothic and early Renaissance periods. He was associated with the workshop of the renowned artist Hans Burgkmair and worked extensively in Augsburg, a major center of art and culture during his time.
Beck is best known for his woodcut illustrations, including those for Emperor Maximilian I's Theuerdank, an epic poem celebrating the emperor's adventures. His works often featured intricate details and narrative compositions that reflected the transitional style of his era, blending Gothic traditions with early Renaissance influences. Beck also contributed to religious and secular art, leaving a significant mark on German printmaking.
