Plate engraved and hand-coloured, depicting the handling of a rifle, numbered "Plate IV" and originating from the 18th century. The figures on the plate are numbered 38 to 49, totaling 12 figures.
It comes from the Encyclopédie, ou Dictionnaire raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers (French for 'Encyclopedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts and Crafts'), which was a comprehensive encyclopedia published in France between 1751 and 1772, with subsequent supplements, revisions, and translations. The encyclopedia was authored by numerous contributors known as the Encyclopédistes and was edited by Denis Diderot, with co-editorship by Jean le Rond d'Alembert until 1759.
