Hand-coloured map shows topographical details, mostly elevations, on Ambon, an island off the southwest coast of Ceram, lying north of the Banda Sea and south of the Molucca islands between Indonesia and New Guinea. The chart notes harbors and small settlements around the coast, and Chateau Victoria a large building on the shore of Lemy Timor. This map by Jakob van der Schley Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, published in Amsterdam, 1770.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772) was a renowned French cartographer and hydrographer. He served as the chief hydrographer of the French Navy and was a member of the French Academy of Sciences. Bellin is best known for his detailed and accurate maps, many of which were published in influential works like Le Petit Atlas Maritime and Histoire générale des voyages. His contributions significantly advanced the field of marine cartography during the 18th century.
