These original hand-coloured lithographs are from the John E. Sowerby’s ”British Wild Flowers, Illustrated by John E. Sowerby. Described, with an introduction and a Key to the Natural Orders, by C. Pierpoint Johnson. Re-Issue: A supplement containing 180 figures of recently discovered flowering plants, by John W. Salts... and the Ferns, horsetails, and club mosses”. The work was published by John van Voorst in London, 1863.

John E. Sowerby (1825–1870) was a British botanical illustrator and author, best known for his detailed and scientifically accurate depictions of plants. He was part of the renowned Sowerby family, famous for their contributions to natural history and art. John E. Sowerby collaborated with several botanists, including Charles Johnson, to produce works such as British Wild Flowers, which combined artistic skill with botanical precision. His illustrations are highly regarded for their clarity and usefulness in plant identification.
