These hand-coloured engravings originate from Ephraim Chambers work "Cyclopaedia, or, An universal dictionary of arts and sciences”. The work was published in London, 1768.
Ephraim Chambers (c. 1680–1740) was an English writer and encyclopedist, best known for his monumental work, Cyclopaedia, or an Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, first published in 1728. The Cyclopaedia was one of the first modern encyclopedias and an important precursor to Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie. Chambers' work was notable for its systematic use of cross-references and broad inclusion of topics, bridging the sciences and humanities. His contributions laid the foundation for the development of encyclopedic knowledge in the Enlightenment era.
