Large antique engravings originate from Beschouwing der Wereld (Contemplation of the World), a renowned emblem book featuring moral and religious reflections, illustrated by Jan Luyken and published in 1708. The work consists of 100 emblematic illustrations, each paired with biblical and moral texts, designed to guide the viewer towards self-reflection and spiritual contemplation.
Jan Luyken (1649–1712) was a Dutch engraver, poet, and illustrator, best known for his emblematic and religious works. Born in Amsterdam, he studied under Cornelis de Bie and became a highly skilled printmaker. His engravings often depicted allegorical, religious, and historical themes, contributing to some of the most significant emblem books of the 17th and early 18th centuries. Many of his works, including Beschouwing der Wereld, were intended to provide moral and philosophical guidance, reflecting the deeply religious climate of the Dutch Golden Age.
