Bilder Pietro Berrettini da Cortona (1596–1669) – "Winged Rider on Pegasus" – Engraving by Claude de La Haye (17th Century)

Beskrivning
This dramatic 17th-century engraving depicts a warrior mounted on Pegasus, the mythical winged horse, ascending through turbulent skies. The composition radiates baroque energy, with flowing lines, muscular anatomy, and rich shading that convey both tension and transcendence.
The original design is attributed to Pietro da Cortona (Pietro Berrettini), a master of Italian Baroque painting and architecture known for his dynamic frescoes and mythological subjects. The engraving was executed by Claude de La Haye, a French printmaker active in Rome, who worked closely with Italian artists to disseminate their works through finely crafted prints.
The Latin and French inscriptions at the base indicate that the scene is tied to the iconography of St. Severinus, patron saint of the papal states, and that the print was issued in Rome at the Laccheri press near San Paolo.
