Bilder Spigelius & Casserius – "Set of 2 Anatomical Plates – Male Urogenital System" – Copperplate Engravings (1645)
Beskrivning
This rare set of two anatomical engravings presents detailed dissections of the male urogenital system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, vas deferens, seminal vesicles, and testes. The plates are labeled Tab. XIII and Tab. XIV, and appear in Book VIII (Lib. VIII) of a 17th-century anatomical atlas associated with Giulio Cesare Casseri (Casserius) and Adrian van den Spieghel (Spigelius).
These engravings originate from the posthumous edition of Casserius's anatomical work completed and published in 1645 by Spigelius, enriched with plates engraved after drawings by Odoardo Fialetti, a Venetian painter and pupil of Tintoretto. The high precision of line, elegant hatching, and typographic labeling are characteristic of early modern scientific illustration bridging Renaissance artistry and empirical inquiry.
This set is a valuable historical record of anatomical knowledge in the pre-modern era and a striking example of copperplate craftsmanship.
