Bilder Spigelius & Casserius – "Tab. XVI – Female Reproductive Anatomy and Clitoris Dissection" – Copperplate Engraving (1645)
Beskrivning
This original 17th-century copperplate engraving, labeled Tab. XVI from Lib. VIII, presents a detailed anatomical study of the female reproductive system, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, vagina, and external genitalia. The plate includes multiple views and dissection stages of the clitoris, a subject rarely treated with such scientific attention in early modern anatomy.
Part of the posthumous edition of the anatomical works of Giulio Cesare Casserius, completed and published in 1645 by Adrian van den Spieghel (Spigelius), this engraving reflects the influence of Odoardo Fialetti, whose clear and expressive illustrations bridged anatomical accuracy with Renaissance draftsmanship.
This plate is of particular historical value as it illustrates early attempts to understand and represent female sexual anatomy with a clarity that was uncommon for its time, emphasizing both structural complexity and symmetry.
