Bilder Didier Robert de Vaugondy - Map of the World - Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, Australia, Pacific Islands, and partially mapped; Map of the World from the Best Authorities - 1751-1760

Beskrivning
This 1752 double-hemisphere world map, titled "Map of the World from the Best Authorities", was created by Didier Robert de Vaugondy (1723–1786), a renowned French cartographer. The map presents a detailed and elegant depiction of the known world in the mid-18th century, reflecting the latest geographical knowledge from European explorers, including Captain James Cook and earlier voyages by Bougainville and Tasman.
The double-hemisphere projection, a hallmark of 18th-century French cartography, is meticulously engraved and hand-colored to outline continental boundaries. The map showcases North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and parts of Australia (labeled "New Holland"), highlighting the evolving cartographic understanding of the Southern Hemisphere. Notably, the Arctic region is incomplete, indicating the limited exploration of the polar regions at the time.
This map was included in Vaugondy’s atlases and geographical publications for King Louis XV’s court and the growing European scientific community, reflecting the period’s advancements in cartography and navigation.
