Beskrivning

"Vue de Bénisouef & Vue de Souetz"

This finely detailed copperplate engraving presents two panoramic views along the Nile: the upper image shows the fortified banks and skyline of Beni Suef (Bénisouef), while the lower composition depicts the historic Red Sea port of Suez (Souetz), with its mosque, palm groves, and surrounding hills. These architectural and topographic scenes capture both the everyday life and strategic importance of these Egyptian cities during the Napoleonic expedition. The clear horizontal lines and delicate architectural detailing reflect Denon’s scientific approach to landscape and urban illustration.
The work was published by Samuel Bagster in London, c. 1809.

The print originates from Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte pendant les campagnes du général Bonaparte by Dominique Vivant Denon, a pioneering visual record of Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. Personally invited by Bonaparte, Denon joined the 1798 expedition and traveled extensively along the Nile, documenting temples, cities, and settlements. His engravings were among the earliest accurate depictions of Egyptian landscapes to reach Europe and played a key role in sparking Western interest in ancient Egypt and the development of Egyptology.
