This large-format double composition features two separate engravings by William Hogarth: The Times and A Country Inn Yard, each rich in narrative and satirical detail. The Times is a scathing allegory of political corruption, urban decay, and national crisis, originally created during a period of economic instability in Britain. It shows scenes of fire, propaganda, and chaos, mocking those in power for mishandling the country's affairs.
A Country Inn Yard offers a contrasting rural scene, bustling with travelers, coachmen, and locals preparing to depart. The chaos and liveliness of the coaching inn yard serve as a humorous counterpoint to the urban unrest above. Together, these prints form a dynamic social commentary typical of Hogarth’s moral and political vision.
The engraving originates from The Whole Works of the Celebrated William Hogarth, as Originally Published, printed in London in 1806 by Thomas Davison for John Stockdale, John Walker, and G. Robinson. The plates were engraved by Thomas Cook, Hogarth’s principal interpreter, who faithfully reproduced the spirit and intensity of the original compositions.
