This detailed map illustrates the Upper Rhenish Circle of the Holy Roman Empire, encompassing regions of present-day southwestern Germany, including Hesse. The map is adorned with a decorative title cartouche at the top left, surrounded by 21 coats of arms representing various cities such as Kassel, Frankfurt, Wetzlar, Hanau, Wiesbaden, Fulda, and Waldeck.
Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) was a German cartographer and engraver, known for his highly detailed and beautifully decorated maps. He founded the Homann publishing house in Nuremberg, which became one of the most important centers of map production in Europe during the 18th century. His works combined scientific accuracy with artistic elegance, often including allegorical cartouches and city views.
