This large and detailed map titled Circuli Westphaliae represents the Westphalian Circle (Reichskreis Westfalen) within the Holy Roman Empire. It shows an elaborate division into individual provinces and states (Status et Provincias), precisely rendered with clear political borders, town names, and geographic features. The title cartouche, supported by classical allegorical figures and cherubs, is a signature decorative element of Homann’s cartographic artistry.
Johann Baptist Homann (1664–1724) was a German cartographer and engraver, known for his highly detailed and beautifully decorated maps. He founded the Homann publishing house in Nuremberg, which became one of the most important centers of map production in Europe during the 18th century. His works combined scientific accuracy with artistic elegance, often including allegorical cartouches and city views.
