Bilder Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) – Map of the Principality of Dombes near Lyon – Large Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (1657)

Beskrivning
"La Principauté de Dombes"
This large and beautifully hand-colored map depicts the historical principality located just north of Lyon, France. Rich in geographical detail, the map shows rivers, towns, forests, and mountainous terrain with artistic flair. Decorative cartouches and allegorical figures enhance the visual appeal, while dual scales (Milliaria Gallica communia and Milliaria Germanica communia) are displayed at the bottom.
The map originates from Atlas Novus, Sive Theatrum Orbis Terrarum: In quo Galliae, Helvetiae, Italiae et Hispaniae published in 1656–1657. It represents a refined example of 17th-century Dutch cartography.
Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) was one of the leading mapmakers of the Dutch Golden Age and a key figure in the development of early atlases. Continuing the legacy of Gerardus Mercator and working closely with the Hondius family, he helped define the visual and scientific standards of European map publishing in the 17th century.
