Beskrivning

This detailed architectural engraving presents the Hofburg Palace complex in Vienna, highlighting two major sections identified as "Chasteau Neuf" and "Chasteau Vieux". The work includes a cartouche with title and decorative elements, typical of late 17th-century engravings. The image comes from Alain Manesson Mallet’s Description de l’Univers, a monumental 5-volume publication offering geographical, historical, and architectural views of cities and regions throughout the world. The engraving is hand-colored and features the distinct style of small-format cityscapes that characterized Mallet’s visual encyclopedias. The work was published in Paris in 1683.

Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) was a French cartographer and engineer, serving under Louis XIV. After a military career as an artillery officer and royal engineer, he turned to geography and engraving. His most influential works include Description de l’Univers (1683) and Les Travaux de Mars, both of which blended scientific knowledge with artistic presentation. Mallet’s engravings are notable for their charming perspective views and elaborate ornamental design.
