Bilder Emanuel Bowen (1694–1767) – Map of the County of Surrey – Large Hand-Colored Copperplate Engraving (c.1760)

Beskrivning
"An Accurate Map of the County of Surrey"
This highly detailed map was created by Emanuel Bowen, one of the most prominent English map engravers of the 18th century. It divides Surrey into its historical "Hundreds", based on the latest surveys of the time, and includes annotations on natural history, trade, manufacture, and the condition of principal towns. The decorative cartouche and dedication to Richard Onslow, Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, reflect the map's refined artistic and political significance. This edition was likely issued around 1760 and published in London as part of a larger county atlas, often used by landowners, officials, and historians of the time.
Emanuel Bowen (1694–1767) was an English map and print seller, engraver to King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. He is known for his detailed and accurate maps, which often included extensive historical and geographical notes directly on the map surface. Bowen trained a generation of cartographers and collaborated with notable figures like Thomas Kitchin. His work is considered foundational in the history of English cartography and remains widely collected today.
