Beskrivning
"Bacon's New Ordnance Plan of Hastings and St. Leonards"
This large and detailed urban map is based on the 25-inch Ordnance Survey and revised to the date of publication using specially commissioned surveys. It presents a comprehensive depiction of the coastal towns of Hastings and St. Leonards in East Sussex, featuring clear indications of parishes, wards, gardens, cemeteries, railway lines, and significant public buildings. The map includes a legend, scale of miles, and decorative border, characteristic of commercial cartography from the late Victorian era.
George Washington Bacon (1830–1922) was a prolific English mapmaker and publisher who established G.W. Bacon & Co. in the 1860s. His company quickly became one of the most recognizable names in commercial cartography, particularly known for its railway maps, atlases, and town plans. Bacon often adapted official Ordnance Survey data for public use, presenting it in a more affordable and user-friendly format. His maps were widely distributed and remain valuable resources for historical and genealogical research.
