"Map of France Divided into Departments"

This detailed map was published in London on January 26, 1795, by C. Lowndes and J. Parsons. It reflects the newly reorganized administrative structure of France following the French Revolution, showing departmental divisions as ordered by the National Assembly in 1790. The map includes rivers, mountain ranges, major roads, and cities, bordered by surrounding nations and labeled with classical regional names. Engraved by L. Andrews, it exemplifies the British cartographic interest in post-revolutionary France and was likely produced for political, educational, and commercial purposes.

Samuel John Neele (1758–1824) was a London-based engraver and publisher renowned for his extensive contributions to late 18th and early 19th-century cartography. He engraved maps for numerous atlases, travel books, and geographical compendia. Known for his precision and decorative style, Neele collaborated with publishers such as Laurie & Whittle and engraved maps that reflected the political changes of his time. Many of his works became standard references for English-speaking audiences seeking geographical and political understanding of continental Europe.
