Beskrivning

"Germanie, France, Italie, Espagne, Isles Britanniques"

This map presents an overview of Western Europe, including the territories of the Roman Empire and their relationship to modern geography. It was drawn and engraved from d’Anville’s Atlas and published in London by John Harrison, No. 115 Newgate Street, on January 24th, 1789. The map reflects d’Anville’s method of bridging ancient and modern cartography by correlating classical names with contemporary boundaries. This transitional approach made his atlases highly respected educational tools in the 18th century.

Jean-Baptiste Bourguignon d’Anville (1697–1782) was one of the most influential geographers of the 18th century. Known for his scholarly rigor, he revolutionized mapmaking by relying solely on historical texts, archaeological records, and verified measurements. He was appointed Royal Geographer to the King of France and was a member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. His maps of the ancient world, including the Orbis Romani and comparative atlases, remain foundational in the field of historical cartography.
