This intricate historical chart illustrates the complex institutional framework of the Holy Roman Empire and the ceremonial process of electing and crowning the Emperor. The composition features multiple scenes, including the election in Frankfurt, coronation in Aachen, and assemblies of the ecclesiastical and secular princes, as well as the imperial cities. Each segment is accompanied by detailed French annotations explaining the responsibilities and hierarchy of the imperial colleges. Originally published in Chatelain’s Atlas Historique, the engraving served both educational and political purposes in early 18th-century Europe.
Henri Abraham Chatelain (1684–1743) was a French Huguenot pastor and geographer, best known for his monumental Atlas Historique, a seven-volume work blending cartography, history, and visual narration. Published between 1705 and 1739, the atlas was a family enterprise and is considered one of the most ambitious geographic projects of the Enlightenment era. His engravings are prized for their clarity, richness of information, and didactic precision.
