This decorative and detailed map depicts the Iberian Peninsula, including the political divisions of Spain and Portugal as they appeared in the mid-19th century. It includes key cities, provinces, and topographical features, with finely engraved borders and scale bars showing British, Portuguese, and Spanish leagues. The map was drawn and engraved by James Dower, whose name appears in the lower right corner alongside his Pentonville, London address. The coloring was most likely applied by hand shortly after publication.
James Dower (1790–1866) was a British cartographer and engraver known for his precise and visually engaging maps. He worked primarily in London, where he produced a variety of geographical works, many of which appeared in mid-19th century atlases and encyclopedic publications. His style combined clarity of information with decorative flourishes, making his maps both useful and collectible.
