This is the original title page from The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine, the seminal atlas by John Speed, first published in 1611–1612. The richly ornamented engraving presents Britannia enthroned at the center, surrounded by symbolic figures of the four major conquests of Britain: the Romans, Saxons, Danes, and Normans. These figures embody the historical narrative framing Speed’s atlas, which was the first to comprehensively map the counties of England and Wales with accompanying historical context. The page also emphasizes royal authority with the Latin phrase Cum Privilegio at the base, signifying royal license.
John Speed was one of the most important English mapmakers of the early 17th century. His work merged cartographic precision with historical storytelling, and The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine remains one of the most celebrated atlases in British cartographic history.
