Beskrivning

"Sebastopol"

This detailed map of the Crimean Peninsula was first published in 1851 as part of John Tallis’s Illustrated Atlas. It includes engraved vignettes of key locations such as Sebastopol, Balaklava Harbour, the Banks of the Alma, Eupatoria, and an inset plan of Sebastopol during its investment by the Allies. The map combines cartographic precision with rich illustrative elements. The illustrations were drawn and engraved by Henry Winkles, while the map itself was designed by John Rapkin.

Henry Winkles (1801–1860) was a British architectural illustrator, engraver, and printer. He co-founded the first steel engraving studio in Germany and is best known for his architectural views and illustrative contributions to mid-19th-century atlases and travel books.

John Rapkin (1815–1876) was a British cartographer and engraver, celebrated for his elegant and decorative maps in The Illustrated Atlas. His work is noted for blending accuracy with artistic detail, often surrounded by engraved vignettes and borders that elevate each map to a work of art.
