Beskrivning
"Asia"
This antique copperplate engraved map of Asia was produced for Walker's Geography, a British educational publication widely used in the 19th century. It presents the Asian continent with geopolitical divisions as known in the early 1800s, including regions such as Tartary, Hindostan, Persia, Arabia, and the Chinese Empire. The map reflects the imperial and colonial perspectives of the era and includes labeled seas, islands, and longitudes from London.
Samuel Augustus Mitchell (1792–1868) was an influential American geographer and publisher best known for making geography accessible to students and the general public. His work included numerous atlases and school textbooks, and his maps were characterized by clear detail and elegant engraving. Though this particular piece was engraved for a British publication, it represents the international exchange of geographic knowledge of the period.
