"Devonshire Divided into its Hundreds"

This detailed 18th-century map of Devonshire outlines the county divided into its historical Hundreds, with towns, rivers, roads, and coastal features labeled. The ornate title cartouche includes the official title and references to population data. Published in London in the mid-18th century, the map features longitude measurements taken from London, a signature practice of Emanuel Bowen.

Emanuel Bowen (1694–1767) was one of the most significant English mapmakers of the 18th century. He served as geographer to both King George II of Great Britain and Louis XV of France. Known for his highly detailed and information-rich engravings, Bowen often included historical and statistical annotations in his works, making them valuable both as cartographic documents and historical references.
