Beskrivning

"The Road of Toulon with the Adjacent Country"

A nautical chart of the harbor of Toulon on the Mediterranean coast of France, shown in remarkable detail during the Seven Years’ War. The map presents military installations, fortifications, roads, coastal features, and depth soundings. A compass rose orients the viewer with North to the bottom.

This map was published in the April 1759 issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine, edited by David Henry (1710–1792) and printed by Richard Cave at St. John’s Gate, London. It served as a strategic reference for readers following military developments in France.

David Henry (1710–1792) was a British writer and printer best known for his editorial work on The Gentleman’s Magazine, which he managed after the death of Edward Cave. He contributed numerous articles and coordinated the publication’s geographical content. Richard Cave, whose exact birth and death years remain undocumented, was the printer for The Gentleman’s Magazine, based at St. John’s Gate in London, continuing the work of his brother Edward Cave.
