"Plan of Havre de Grace"

This historical engraving shows a strategic military map of Le Havre (then called Havre de Grace), including a detailed plan of its fortifications, harbor layout, and nearby topography. Below the plan, an inset depicts the dramatic naval bombardment of July 4th, 1759, during the Seven Years’ War, with British ships positioned in attack formation against the French coastal defenses. Labels identify batteries, anchor points, and surrounding features, offering a clear understanding of the conflict zone. The map was published in the July 1759 issue of The Gentleman’s Magazine, a key British periodical that regularly featured current military and political maps during wartime.

David Henry (1710–1792) was an English journalist and publisher who succeeded Edward Cave as editor of The Gentleman’s Magazine, one of the most influential publications of the 18th century. He played a central role in disseminating news, maps, and political discourse throughout Britain. Richard Cave, though less is known about his life, continued the printing legacy of his family at St. John’s Gate in London, ensuring the magazine’s regular production and high-quality engravings.
