This monumental 19th-century engraving reproduces Eugène Delacroix’s dramatic depiction of the Crusaders entering Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. The image captures the intensity and grandeur of the scene with Delacroix’s signature romantic dynamism and emotional depth.

It was engraved and published as part of Galeries historiques de Versailles, an ambitious visual chronicle of French and European history, curated and overseen by Charles Gavard. Commissioned by King Louis-Philippe I, the series was part of his transformation of the Palace of Versailles into the Museum of the History of France. Gavard’s innovative use of the diagraphe allowed for faithful reproductions of grand-scale historical paintings, cementing the series as both an artistic and documentary milestone of the 19th century.
