This original 18th-century engraving presents three distinct species of fish: Les Scyènes, Les Héros Coyettes, and Le Chirurgien, each depicted with remarkable detail and vivid naturalistic coloring. The illustration is taken from Histoire Naturelle, part of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, a monumental Enlightenment-era work on natural history. The engraving was executed by Robert Bénard after illustrations supervised by Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre, whose contributions covered ichthyology, drawing upon the visual traditions of Bloch, Gronovius, and other early naturalists.
Robert Bénard (1731–1794) was a prolific French engraver known for his scientific and technical illustrations, particularly for the Encyclopédie by Diderot and d’Alembert. Abbé Pierre Joseph Bonnaterre (1752–1804), a priest and scholar, compiled the ichthyology volume of the Encyclopédie Méthodique, using over 400 species to document the diversity of marine life through a blend of classical and modern sources.
