Bilder Anonymous – Cartoon on the Treaty of Fontainebleau – Etching and Engraving (1785–1786)

Beskrivning
This political cartoon illustrates the peace concluded in Paris on November 8, 1785, ending the so-called Ketel War (or Cheese War) between the Netherlands and Emperor Joseph II of Austria. In the scene, the Austrian emperor and King Louis XVI of France are seated at a table, dividing a large Dutch cheese. Frederick the Great of Prussia enters the room, eager to partake in the division, while the Elector of Cologne sweeps crumbs from the table. A wall map labeled Plan von dem Scheld Fluß und der Stadt Antwerpen 1785 refers to the Scheldt River dispute that triggered the conflict. The caption below the scene offers an explanation in both French and German.
This anonymously created etching and engraving reflects the political tensions and diplomatic negotiations of the late 18th century and exemplifies the use of satire to comment on European power struggles. The print was produced in France (possibly) between 1785 and 1786.
